Chapter Ten

Dalton and Cleavon sped on into the night. For the first few miles they often checked behind them, but when they accepted that they hadn’t been seen leaving and a pursuit was unlikely to come soon they became calmer and slowed down.

They had agreed that if they got away without trouble they would stop at the station where Hallam and Packard had planned to leave them. The next morning they would move on to White Plains.

On the first leg of their journey they encountered no problems and they judged it was around midnight when they approached their destination. Dalton alighted first and checked out the surrounding area and when he signified that all was fine Cleavon helped Norwood down from the wagon and escorted him into the station house, which turned out to be just a shell.

They settled down with Norwood sitting at the back of the building and Dalton and Cleavon sitting in the doorway, the strong moonlight revealing the terrain for some distance down the tracks. When fifteen minutes had passed with no sign of trouble either from outside or from their prisoner Dalton stood over Norwood and removed the sack from his head.

“It’s time to talk,” he said and then backed away to rejoined Cleavon in the doorway. “We’ll start with your order to Packard and Hallam to kill us.”

“I didn’t do that!” Norwood said and he looked so aghast Dalton figured he was telling the truth. “I agreed with Ercole that you should be run out of town, like everyone who causes problems there.”

“Except they dragged us behind that wagon and we’re lucky to be alive.” Dalton narrowed his eyes. “They weren’t so lucky.”

“I’m pleased you survived, but they take their orders from Ercole.”

“I can believe that.” Dalton gave a wide smile to let him know how reasonable they were being. Then he removed the smile. “Why are you killing people from Lucky Gulch?”

“I’m not doing that either.” Norwood closed his eyes for a moment and then sighed. “Believe me.”

“We just want the truth. If we like what we hear we’ll let you go. If we don’t we’ll hand you over to Sheriff Adams.”

Cleavon flinched as they hadn’t agreed to release him, but Norwood was facing Dalton and didn’t appear to notice.

“In that case take me to Sheriff Adams, who’ll release me as I won’t be able to help him either.”

Dalton folded his arms and waited, but when it became clear that Norwood wouldn’t offer anything more he turned to Cleavon to continue the questioning.

“My father was one of the people who banded together to kill Schneider Braun,” he said, his strong tone showing he’d decided to make this statement some time ago. “He paid for that with his life, as did Savannah Campbell and Keenan Hurst. If you’re not behind the killings, you could be next.”

Norwood gulped and lowered his head, his reaction seemingly confirming that Cleavon’s statement was valid.

“We did band together, but we didn’t kill Schneider,” he said after a while and raised his head.
